An approach to increase the power output of Karnafuli Hydroelectric Power Station: A step to sustainable development in Bangladesh’s energy sector

Abstract: Renewable energy has become the most prominent source of energy to reduce carbon emissions around the globe. Undoubtedly, hydro energy is very much clean energy among other sources. In Bangladesh, hydro energy is available only in a specific southern area contributing several hundred megawatts to the national grid. This paper devotes to assessing the capacity and practicability of a hydropower plant to boost the power output by implementing the combined cycle hydropower system. The proposed method has been dev… Show more

“…MHPPs work by utilizing the water flow from a natural source, such as a river or stream, to generate electricity through the use of turbines and generators. Control systems ensure the effective operation and monitoring of these components, optimizing power generation from the available water flow [26]. The advantages of implementing MHPPs include their lower environmental impact, as they require smaller dams and reservoirs compared to larger-scale installations.…”

“…By utilizing the potential energy of the water in the 300 square mile lake that had been artificially formed by building a dam in the Karnafuli river, the Karnaphuli hydropower plant began producing electricity in 1962 from its two units, each of which had a capacity of 40 MW. At that time, Kaptai was regarded as the biggest power plant in the country [5]. The 273 km-long Kaptai-Siddhirganj 132 KV transmission line's parallel construction was finished, and both power plants Siddhirganj and Kaptai were integrated into the same grid [6].…”

“…The most common RE sources in Bangladesh at the moment are hydroelectric power, biogas, solar, and wind energy [12]. The only power plant in the nation that produces 230 MW of electrical energy is the Karnaphuli Hydro Power Station [13]. Wind energy is mostly obtained in coastal areas where wind is dominant.…”
