An Automated Draft Report Generator for Peripheral Blood Smear Examinations Based on Complete Blood Count Parameters

Abstract: BackgroundComplete blood count (CBC) results play an important role in peripheral blood smear (PBS) examinations. Many descriptions in PBS reports may simply be translated from CBC parameters. We developed a computer program that automatically generates a PBS draft report based on CBC parameters and age- and sex-matched reference ranges.MethodsThe Java programming language was used to develop a computer program that supports a graphical user interface. Four hematology analyzers from three different laboratorie… Show more

“…The complete blood count (CBC) with differential (w/diff) is an inexpensive, convenient and valuable test and useful as a routine test for hematologic diagnosis. [1,2] If abnormal cells are found in CBC w/diff, the next step is usually a physician-requested peripheral blood smear (PBS) examination. PBS examination has direct diagnostic utility for certain groups of hematologic diseases while providing adjunctive information to CBC results.…”

“…Two studies were conducted on automated PBS reporting. 6,7 A webbased synoptic reporting system for PBS interpretation has been developed to automatically describe detailed explanations helpful to clinicians and generate a PBS reporting template when inputting results obtained by observing PBS. 6 A computer program that automatically generates a PBS examination draft report based on CBC parameters was developed in Korea.…”
