This study focuses on translation shifts in speech act realisation patterns in two English translations of the Chinese work Fusheng Liuji. It employs analytical tools from cross-cultural pragmatics to describe speech act behaviour in the original and its translations. Lin uses more translation shifts -including significant shifts in strategy use, and moderate shifts in information sequencingthan Pratt & Chiang, who mainly retain the original pragmatic features. Both the translators and the original author make frequent use of request formulae. The two translations also show marked shifts from lexical to syntactic modification of requests. The article further examines the translators' approaches to translation in terms of their concept of translation and the historical and social contexts of their translations.

浮生六记 Fusheng Liuji 'Six Records of a Floating Life' is an autobiography and the chef-d'oeuvre of 沈复 Shen Fu (1763-1825, which concerns delightful trivialities in his impoverished life and his wife 芸 Yun, a meritorious woman characterised by intelligence, diligence and punctiliousness. As an illustrious 性灵 xingling work enriched by literary, aesthetic and linguistic prowess, Six Records of a Floating Life has been rendered into English by an illustrious bilingual writer and translator 林语堂 Lin Yutang and Shirley M. Black, as well as Leonard Pratt and Su-hui Chiang, whose version is featured by a socio-historical perspective (Lu 2010). In this research, I scrutinise Pratt and Chiang's translation under the framework of feminist translation (Flotow 1991), exploring strategies of supplementing, hijacking as well as prefacing and footnoting. In the introduction section, Pratt and Chiang extol the heroine Yun and introduce women serving as courtesans in Qing (1644Qing ( -1912 China. Additionally, the translators also employ annotations to justify Yun's provocative utterances. Apart from prefacing and footnoting, Pratt and Chiang also deploy strategies of supplementing and hijacking, so as to highlight Yun's merit and avoid dated expressions.

Six Records of a Life Adrift is a Qing dynasty memoir written in classical Chinese by a clerk named Shen Fu (1763–?1825). It holds a unique place in the history of Chinese literature for its innovative form, lyrical narrative voice, and candid content, which deals with Shen Fu's marriage to Chen Yun, an outspoken woman with a strong sense of autonomy. Two of the records are missing, but the remaining four are each on a different emotional aspect of Shen Fu's past, and overlap temporally, thus building up a multilayered, affective account of his life, similar in structure to a classical Chinese poem. The book, first published in Shanghai in 1878, is an immensely rich resource for the study of everyday life in late imperial China, and has been published in over 100 editions in China. It has been translated into 14 languages.
