Introduction "Body image" is more than the visual perception of size and it is probably multidimensional. It is known to influence eating behaviors and self-esteem of adolescents.Although widely studied in developed countries, it has been studied little in Sri Lanka.Objectives This study was designed to translate and culturally adapt a tool to assess dimensions of body image in Sri Lankan adolescents. MethodsThe study was carried out in the Anuradhapura District on school going children in grades nine to eleven. A multidimensional body image questionnaire was translated to Sinhalese language using the nominal group consensus method. The translated version was administered to 278 (114 boys) students after content validation and pre-testing.To assess test-retest reliability, the same questionnaire was administered to the same sample after two weeks. Psychometric properties were assessed using exploratory factor analysis.Results Three-factor model emerged when dimensions in body image were analysed. Both boys and girls had almost identical factor structure. The three dimensions identified were "affective body image", "body perception" and "orientation on body size". All factors had good internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha > 0.76 and explained more than 56% of the total variance in both sexes. ConclusionsThe translated body image questionnaire was a valid and reliable tool which can be used in Sri Lankan adolescents. Both genders had a similar, multidimensional body image construct.

Assertive, trainable and older dogs are perceived as more dominant in multi-dog households

Social dominance is an important and widely used concept, however, different interpretations have led to ambiguity in the scientific literature and in popular science. Even though in ethology dominance is an attribute of dyadic encounters, and not a characteristic of the individual, 'dominance' has often been referred to as a personality trait in animals. Since few studies have specifically examined the link between personality traits and dominance status, we investigated this in dogs living in multi-dog households using a questionnaire, which required owners to specify whether the dog had a dominant or submissive status, and comprised items of both the features of the individual (i.e. personality traits) and previous social experience (interactions with group members and strangers). Four distinct personality factors emerged from 23 behavioural items by principal component analysis, labelled as assertiveness, trainability, intraspecific aggression and independence. Binomial logistic regression was used to examine how the demographic information of the dogs and the personality factors predicted the owner's estimate of the dog' status as dominant or submissive. The personality factor assertiveness accounted for 34% of the variance in dominance status, trainability 5% and dog age contributed 4%. Dogs perceived as dominant scored more highly on the factors assertiveness and trainability, which can help explain why 'dominance' has often been suggested to be a personality trait, rather than a dyad-specific social status according to different traditions in behavioural research. Similar to the 'social dominance' trait in humans, owner ascribed dominance showed a quadratic trajectory in cross-sectional mean change across the lifespan, increasing during adulthood and then maintaining high levels until old age. Overall, our study proposes a multifactorial background of dominance relationships in pet dogs, suggesting that not only previous experience of social interactions between individuals but also age and personality traits influence owner perceived dominance status in multi-dog households.

The combination of Augmented Reality (AR) and pervasive games in urban environments offers a great opportunity for learning about a specific urban environment. Since pervasive games are played in a physical space, the user familiarity with such environment might play a key role in the user motivation and in the whole user experience. In this paper, we analyse how an augmented reality pervasive game is experienced in an urban game. The aim of the game is to engage people in informal learning activities increasing their knowledge about a specific area. We also introduce the concept of Personal Urban Awareness (PUA) as a way to represent the level at which a person feels connected and knows about a specific environment. Thus, we try to find out whether the user engagement and PUA are related. In order to research this, we run an experiment where two groups of users, familiar with the environment and not familiar with it, play the augmented reality game in an urban space. The results suggest that AR pervasive games might be a good approach to engage citizens and improve their awareness about a specific area.
