An Economic Assessment of Fish and Prawn Health Management in Andhra Pradesh

Abstract: The assessment of physical and financial losses due to incidence of diseases in aquaculture is essential to strengthen the socio-economic status of fish farmers. This study has been conducted in four districts (Nellore, West Godavari, East Godavari, and Prakasham) of Andhra Pradesh which ranks first in the production of freshwater prawn and second in freshwater fish in India. “…Ectoparasitic diseases account for 70% of the problems, while bacterial and fungal diseases account for 27.5% and 2.5% problems, respectively (Rao et al, 1992). Considering the fish and prawn health management in Andhra Pradesh the losses have been found high due to disease than due to environmental factors (Viswanatha et al, 2014). In case of low aquatic environmental temperature fish reduces metabolic activities, which in turn makes the fish more susceptible during the winter period towards parasitic infection (Hossain et al, 2013).…”

“…(Sharshar & Azab, ). All these diseases have been reported to cause severe economic and production loss over the past few years (Ahamed et al, ; Alam, Pokrant, Yakupitiyage, & Phillips, ; Faruk, Sarker, Alam, & Kabir, ; Paul & Vogl, ; Viswanatha, Bhatta, & Shankar, ). Sometimes, apparently healthy prawns are also reported to become infected to their shell by Vibrio, Pseudomonas , and Aeromonas spp .…”
