An edge-based approach to the alignment of syntactic phases and prosodic phrases1

Abstract: In phase‐based syntax, syntactic structure is sent in chunks – spell‐out domain by spell‐out domain – for phonological interpretation. The spell‐out domain of an embedded clause would, then, form a separate phonological domain from its matrix. In this paper, I test this theory on the prosodic phrasing of relative clauses in some Bantu languages, and show that the phrasing contradicts the proposal that embedded spell‐out domains necessarily form distinct prosodic domains. Instead, the phrasing is most consisten… Show more

“…This boundary is argued to be situated between the prefixes and the root in words of lexical categories since the root's left edge coincides in this case with the left edge of the complement of a category-defining node (cf. Edge Alignment Theory, Selkirk 1986;Downing 2010;Cheng & Downing 2012; see also Scheer 2010, 238-246 and throughout the book for a discussion of the special status of the left edge of roots and words):…”

“…33 Another option is to take the P as the ground truth for the "right" syntactic tree and assert that the original syntactic analysis has been revealed by the prosodic tree to be incorrect (Liberman 1975b;Wagner 2005Wagner , 2010Hirsch and Wagner 2015). A similar option is to take P as the ground truth for the "right" syntactic analysis and assert that it's not syntactic constituents that correspond to prosodic ones, but a different kind of syntactic unit-syntactic phases e.g., Ishihara (2004), Kratzer and Selkirk (2007), Dobashi (2009), Downing (2010), Cheng and Downing (2016). (Another option would be to take P S as the ground truth for the "right" prosodic tree and assert that the original phonological analysis has been revealed by the syntactic tree to be incorrect: this might characterize the approach taken by linguists who take prosodic constituents to be defined by hypotheses about how syntactic trees are transduced to prosodic ones.…”
