An efficient metric-based (EM-B) location management scheme for wireless cellular networks

One of the key issues in cellular mobile communication is to find current location of mobile terminals to deliver the service, which is known as location management. Although dynamic location management schemes show better performance but static schemes are more popular due to their simplicity. One such static scheme is reporting center in which some cells are designated as reporting centers. This paper proposes a basic criteria for performing clustering and successive paging in reporting center scheme and also analyzes the cost effectiveness of three different versions of reporting center scheme: Simple, Clustered, and Combination of clustering with successive paging. Simulation results show that the combination of clustering with successive paging outperforms the other two versions independent of call to mobility ratio. General TermsLocation management.

In this paper, we are proposing a bio-inspired location management (LM) technique for personal communication system (PSC). It is based on artificial immune system (AIS), with self-adaptation and self-update attributes to perform the location management, and helps to achieve better quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) for the mobile users. Here, we are suggesting a modified mobile switching center (MSC) architecture, and an adaptive self-modified location management procedure. The proposed mobile switching center architecture has an advantage of rule-based and fact-based system to store the rules and facts related to location management procedure, and it shows the intelligent behavior of system. The mobile switching center calculates the best method for location management and the rule-based system trigged the rules to perform the techniques. The system stores the result (techniques for location management) in fact-based system for future use. The efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed techniques have been analyzed, and it observed that the proposed system has 45-50% improvement in performance over the current location management techniques. Here, we are using performance parameters such as signaling cost, database update cost, overhead measurement, and mobility management cost.

During the past decades, mobile communication is in the vigorous development, where the cell planning problem (CPP) is one of impressive research issues. CPP has been proved to be NP-Complete, and many works develop intelligent heuristic search strategies to solve it. Among many factors to affect the cell planning, the major one is the signaling cost, where the location management is critical to the cost. In this paper, we focus on how to tackle CPP such that the signaling cost can be minimized. We adopt a meta-heuristic iterative search algorithm, Tabu Search (TS), to deal with the cell planning issue for the base station and propose novel designs to improve the TS capability, including initialization and neighbor swap strategy. The simulation results reveal that our TS outperforms traditional TS, genetic algorithms, and several previous works in CPP.
