An Embedded-Sensor Approach for Concrete Resistivity Measurement in On-Site Corrosion Monitoring: Cell Constants Determination

Abstract: The concrete electrical resistivity is a prominent parameter in structural health monitoring, since, along with corrosion potential, it provides relevant qualitative diagnosis of the reinforcement corrosion. This study proposes a simple expression to reliable determine resistivity from the concrete electrical resistance (RE) provided by the corrosion sensor of the Integrated Network of Sensors for Smart Corrosion Monitoring (INESSCOM) we have developed. The novelty here is that distinct from common resistivity… Show more

“…In recent years, much progress has been made in developing embedded sensors capable of detecting the depassivation of reinforcement (Andrade, 2020;Daniyal and Akhtar, 2020;Rodrigues et al, 2021), and of measuring the electrochemical potential of adjacent rebars (Karthick et al, 2018; or the resistivity of concrete cover (Ramón et al, 2021). Other authors have designed sensors to determine the presence of chlorides or concrete carbonation (Gandía-Romero et al, 2016a;2016b;Ramani and Kuang, 2020), as well as to quantify other corrosion kinetic-related parameters; for example, humidity or oxygen concentration (Martínez-Ibernón et al, 2021).…”

“…5b), where i 0 is the current recorded at the outset (t 0) and i LIM the current measured upon conclusion. As demonstrated in a recent paper [54], the most reliable way to record i 0 is to use very short pulses ( t 5 ms) with short sampling time (0.1 ms). However, as discussed in [39] to reliably determine i LIM the quasi-steady state system response ( t 50 s) must be recorded.…”
