An endogastric capsule for measuring tumor markers ingastric juice: an evaluation of the safety and efficacy of a new diagnostic tool

Abstract: The endogastric capsule is a simple, non-invasive tool for the measurement of CEA and CA 19-9 levels in gastric juice. These values may discriminate between normal or minor pathologic changes and precancerous lesions or carcinomas. Further investigations are warranted, since this may represent a new method for gastric cancer screening.

“…As previously demonstrated by the pertinent literature, too many variables seem to impact on the intragastric concentrations of tumor markers thereby affecting the results of a systematic analysis: above all, the inconsistent and uncontrollable direction of cancer cell dissemination (apical vs. basolateral secretion, i.e. the endoluminal vs. the classical route of metastasis), the presence of endoluminal obstruction determined by the tumor itself, the coexistence of other inflammatory, infectious, or precancerous lesions involving gastric mucosa, as well as endoscopic maneuvers (taking biopsies with diagnostic intent) [15,20,21,22,23,24]. …”

“…The first three, which are currently routinely investigated in the serum of GC patients for diagnosis and surveillance, have already been evaluated in GL of GC patients in previous studies [9,10,11,12,13,14,15]. Of interest, only one previous study dealt with the detection of CA 50 in biological fluids of GC patients other than serum, and that was not GL [16].…”

“…Recently, a small gelatin capsule containing a pierced plastic cover surrounding a piece of absorbent paper was developed to obtain gastric juice (5). Additionally, a noninvasive string test has also been reported useful to obtain gastric juice samples for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection (6).…”

“…Various noninvasive methods have recently been developed for obtaining gastric juices (13)(14)(15). For example, a noninvasive string test has been reported to get gastric juice samples for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection (13,14).…”

“…For example, a noninvasive string test has been reported to get gastric juice samples for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection (13,14). Additionally, a capsule method containing a pierced plastic cover and a piece of absorbent paper has also been developed to get gastric juice (15). We therefore designed this study to investigate the differences of α1-antitrypsin concentrations in gastric juice between patients with gastric cancer and benign gastroduodenal diseases, and to develop a novel noninvasive gastric juice α1-antitrypsin test for cancer screening using a string test to obtain gastric juice.…”
