An epidemiologic study of antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus species isolated from equine samples submitted to a diagnostic laboratory

Abstract: BackgroundAntimicrobial resistance limits traditional treatment options and increases costs. It is therefore important to estimate the magnitude of the problem so as to provide empirical data to guide control efforts. The aim of this study was to investigate the burden and patterns of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among equine Staphylococcus samples submitted to the University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UKVDL) from 1993 to 2009. Retrospective data of 1711 equine Staphylococcus samples submi… Show more

“…Therefore, there have been several investigations of antimicrobial resistance in this microorganism in humans and animals throughout the world [ 6 , 7 , 12 , 17 ]. Resistance profiles of bacteria are useful to enhance treatment options in cases of AMR bacterial infection [ 1 ].…”

“…Logistic regression is a flexible method that allows for investigation of a temporal trend or exposure of interest while adjusting for the effects of other relevant covariates, with the capacity to include random effects. Additionally, logistic regression facilitates the calculation of odds ratios and confidence intervals for the temporal trend or exposure [35,36]. Logistic regression requires a dichotomous outcome, so clinical breakpoints with an intermediate category must be treated according to the focus of the study and the definitions of I to reduce the number of levels to two.…”
