The aim of this study is to examine the effects of Screen keyboard and color on the visual performance and subjective satisfaction of the novice computer users among schoolchildren. This study includes three experiments; experiment I investigates the effect of Chinese character on visual performance and satisfaction; experiment II investigates the effect of lightness combination in Chinese characters and backgrounds of keys on visual performance. From these experiments, some conclusions have been made as follows: in the effect of Chinese character on typing time, the Screen keyboards had a significant effect on typing time. The best Chinese character is Bold-black type, which had the shortest typing time; the worst one is Sung type, which had the longest typing time. The Screen keyboards had a significant effect on satisfaction. The best Chinese character for satisfaction is Regular script type. In the effect of lightness collocation on visual performance, lightness difference between Chinese characters and keys (backgrounds) that had significant effects on visual performance and subjective satisfaction. The Screen keyboard designed in white word and black background had the shortest typing time and highest satisfaction.
