An evaluation of force attenuation, comfort properties and density of materials for hip protective pads

Abstract: We evaluated 15 materials for their effectiveness as hip protective pads for elderly women, including several materials used in commercially available pads and novel materials. The materials’ densities were measured, and they were tested for force attenuation (relevant to protection), permeability index (relevant to thermophysiological wear comfort) and interface pressure delivery (relevant to pressure comfort). Force attenuation values were obtained in drop impact tests. Permeability data were obtained from t… Show more

“…They have good air permeability and resilience to compression and therefore a good substitute for conventional cushioning materials such as polychloroprene, polyurethane and polyethylene foam, etc. These fabrics are used for a wide range of products including shoes [1], bras [2], bedding [3], car seats [4], wound dressings [5,6], pressure inserts [7] and hip protective pads [8]. Spacer fabrics with different thicknesses and compression behaviours are needed to accommodate different applications.…”

“…Rekayasa desain dalam sebuah produk sering digunakan untuk mengatasi berbagai kasus dalam masalah kesehatan. Salah satu contoh produk yang memanfaatkan rekayasa desain adalah hip protective pad [10] . Hip protective pad merupakan suatu produk yang memodifikasi celana biasa menjadi celana yang aman ketika orang terjatuh.…”

“…where FA is the force attenuation (N); f SR is the impact force on silicone rubber (SR) as artificial flesh (N); f SF is the impact force on the experimental spacer fabric (N). Force attenuation was normalized per unit volume using equation 4 due to variation of the thickness of experimental spacer fabrics, assuming the effect of thickness of spacer fabrics on force attenuation is linear in all samples (Wardiningsih and Troynikov, 2019).…”
