-The evolution of natural ecosystems is controled by a high level of biodiversity, In sharp contrast, intensive agricultural systems involve monocultures associated with high input of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Intensive agricultural systems have clearly negative impacts on soil and water quality and on biodiversity conservation. Alternatively, cropping systems based on carefully designed species mixtures reveal many potential advantages under various conditions, both in temperate and tropical agriculture. This article reviews those potential advantages by addressing the reasons for mixing plant species; the concepts and tools required for understanding and designing cropping systems with mixed species; and the ways of simulating multispecies cropping systems with models. Multispecies systems are diverse and may include annual and perennial crops on a gradient of complexity from 2 to n species. A literature survey shows potential advantages such as (1) higher overall productivity, (2) better control of pests and diseases, (3) enhanced ecological services and (4) greater economic profitability. Agronomic and ecological conceptual frameworks are examined for a clearer understanding of cropping systems, including the concepts of competition and facilitation, above-and belowground interactions and the types of biological interactions between species that enable better pest management in the system. After a review of existing models, future directions in modelling plant mixtures are proposed. We conclude on the need to enhance agricultural research on these multispecies systems, combining both agronomic and ecological concepts and tools. species mixture / plant mixture / cropping system / agroforestry system / agrobiodiversity / resource sharing / crop model / competition / facilitation

. 2005. Field evaluation of regression equations to estimate crop yield losses due to weeds. Can. J. Plant Sci. 85: 955-962. Various regression equations based on weed density alone, or relative time of weed and crop emergence or crop density in addition to weed density have been developed in western Canada to estimate the effects of wild oat (Avena fatua L.) and volunteer cereals on yield loss of field crops, and to advise farmers on the economics of weed control with herbicides. In , 1998, several of these equations were evaluated in 9 barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), 9 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and 11 canola (Brassica napus L.) fields in Alberta. Wild oat was the dominant weed in the barley and wheat fields, and wild oat or volunteer cereals in the canola fields. In barley and wheat, more complex equations based on both weed density and either crop density or relative time of weed and crop emergence were more reliable in estimating yield losses due to wild oat than those based on weed density alone. In canola, an equation based on volunteer barley and canola density provided the most reliable estimates. Under the assumed crop prices and herbicide costs, these equations also resulted in the best estimates of whether or not a herbicide application resulted in a net profit or loss. Herbicide application was rarely economical in barley, but usually economical in wheat and canola reflecting the different market value of the crops. The implementation of the weed economic threshold concept is likely to be more feasible in low-value crops such as feed barley than in higher-value crops such as canola. Dans l'ouest du Canada, on se sert d'équations de régression pour estimer l'incidence de la folle avoine (Avena fatua L.) et de la repousse spontanée des céréales sur le rendement des cultures d'après la densité de peuplement des adventices, la levée des mauvaises herbes et des cultures ou la densité de peuplement des adventices et de la culture, l'objectif étant de conseiller les agriculteurs sur le désherbage chimique. Les auteurs ont évalué plusieurs de ces équations dans 9 champs d'orge (Hordeum vulgare L.), 9 de blé (Triticum aestivum L.) et 11 de canola (Brassica napus L.) de l'Alberta en 1997, 1998 et 1999. La folle avoine était la principale adventice dans les champs d'orge et de blé alors que ceux de canola étaient surtout envahis par la folle avoine et les repousses spontanées de céréales. Dans les champs de blé et d'orge, les équations plus complexes, reposant à la fois sur la densité de peuplement des mauvaises herbes et sur celle de la culture ou sur la levée relative de l'adventice et de l'espèce cultivée sont plus fiables que les équations se fondant uniquement sur la densité de peuplement de la mauvaise herbe pour estimer les pertes de rendement attribuables à la folle avoine. Dans les champs de canola, c'est l'équation reposant sur la densité des repousses spontanées d'orge et sur la densité du canola qui donne les estimations les plus sûres. RESUMO -As plantas daninhas acarretam reduções no rendimento das culturas agrícolas. Os modelos matemáticos de estimativa de perda de rendimento na cultura devido à interferência dessas plantas podem ser instrumentos úteis à tomada de decisão de manejo. Se for possível prever as perdas de rendimento, será possível decidir se é viável ou não a aplicação de uma medida de controle. Há na literatura vários modelos matemáticos empíricos de regressão lineares, não-lineares e polinomiais usados para estimar as perdas de rendimento devido às plantas daninhas. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo apresentar uma análise dos modelos matemáticos presentes na literatura utilizados para estimar as perdas de rendimento que as plantas daninhas acarretam à cultura, considerando o ajuste matemático às observações e a descrição biológica do comportamento dessas perdas.Palavras-chave: modelos matemáticos, perdas de rendimento, plantas daninhas. ABSTRACT -The presence of weeds in any production system involving plants causes crop yield losses. Mathematical models for crop yield loss estimation due to the interference of weeds can be useful tools for decision-making management strategies. If it is possible to predict crop yield loss, it will be possible to decide whether it is viable to apply control measures. There are several empirical models in the literature used to estimate crop yield loss due to the presence of weeds, which are linear, non linear and polynomial. The goal of this work is to present an analysis of the existing mathematical models used to estimate crop yield loss due to weeds by considering both their mathematical fit and biological behavior.Keywords: mathematical models, yield loss, weeds. INTRODUÇÃOAs culturas agrícolas estão sujeitas a uma série de fatores do ambiente que influenciam o crescimento, o desenvolvimento e a produtividade econômica. A interferência de plantas daninhas acarreta reduções nos rendimentos das culturas agrícolas; por exemplo, no Brasil as perdas estimadas na cultura de milho devido à competição com plantas daninhas têm sido descritas como sendo da ordem de 10%, e em casos nos quais não tenha sido feito nenhum método de controle essa redução pode atingir 85% da produção (Karam & Cruz, 2004).
