An Evaluation of Partial Matrix Excision with Winograd Method for the Surgical Treatment of Ingrown Toenails

Abstract: Objective: The most frequent nail pathology of the hallux is the ingrown toenail. In our study, we evaluated Winograd's partial matrix excision method as a treatment for unilateral ingrown hallux toenail. Methods: Winograd's partial toenail excision was performed on 239 patients (127 males, 112 females; mean age 37.4 years) with an ingrown toenail. Primary patient complaints included a painful hallux toenail, discharge, nail deformation, and difficulty walking. According to the Heifetz staging system, there wer… Show more

“…Recurrence rate in Perez‐Rey et al's study was 1.1% (Perez‐Rey et al, ). In the literature, recurrence rate for the wedge resection was found as 13.2% in Kose et al's study, as 7.5% in Perez‐Rey et al's study, as 3.7% in Güler et al's study which was performed on 239 patients, and as 5% in Akpolat et al's study (Perez‐Rey et al, ; Akpolat et al, ; Güler, Mahiroğulları, Mutlu, & Çerçi, ; Kose et al, ). In our study, recurrence rate after 1 year was 5.4% for chemical matricectomy with NaOH and 3.6% for wedge resection.…”

“…Some authors reporting on this technique have presented recurrence rates of 12% [4,6], an average postoperative infection rate of 10% [6], and a high degree of functional and esthetic patient satisfaction, both above 90%, as verified by large-scale studies [6,18,19]. In order to decrease recurrence as well as postoperative rates and healing time, an approach was developed that involves two modifications to the originally described technique [15].…”

“…These differences in functional outcomes might be due to the postoperative recovery time, which allows a quick reintroduction into activities of daily living, increasing the perception of functionality. In some patients, the conventional Winograd technique might cause a narrowing of the nail that can be seen as cosmetically less favorable [19], particularly by females [6,20,22]. For example, Huang et al [17] and Ali et al [6] showed 5.26% and 7.69% of complaints due to the esthetic result.…”
