An Evaluation of Stakeholder Perception Differences in Forest Road Assessment Factors Using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)

Abstract: Many factors, with differing priority ratios, need to be assessed in the evaluation of forest roads. Stakeholder perceptions differ in the road assessment process and this research addresses those differences between academic and practitioner groups. The focus was on four main forest road assessment factor groups (technical, economic, environmental, and social) within 23 sub-factors to determine the priority ratios using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Stakeholder groups expressed different priori… Show more

“…Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) is a math-based GIS-compatible and multidisciplinary decision method utilized in various fields and also in the planning of routes, construction, and maintenance of roads and railways and subways [48][49][50][51][52]. At the same time, AHP is also preferred and used in forestry studies [53][54][55][56][57][58]. In the AHP method, analysis can be subjective inasmuch as the factors are limited through user-specified constraints [46].…”

“…As stated in this paper, the AHP method "is applied in many and different research fields, including nature, economy and society". Recent applications of the AHP method in forestry involve, among other issues, forest road assessment [39], evaluation of non-wood forest products [40], analysis of forest fire risk [41], and ranking of indicators of sustainability [42].…”
