This paper proposes a collaborative system based on WebRTC technology to improve digital universities eLearning environment. It allows teachers and students, through a web browser, to communicate via chat, audio and camera. It also supports file transfer and screen sharing for computer connected lab equipment. All these features are functional in an IP environment without need for Internet access. For its design and realization, we had to implement a WebRTC signalisation server to manage real-time applications, using the three WebRTC APIs: MediaStream for the acquisition and synchronization of audio and video, Peer Connection for communication between user's browsers and RTCDataChannel for file transfer, Chat and Screen Sharing.

Web real-time communication (WebRTC) standards do not define precisely how two browsers establish and control their communication. Therefore, a signalling mechanism/protocol has not specified in WebRTC. The essential goal of this research is to create and apply a WebRTC bi-directional video conferencing based on mesh topology (many-to-many) using Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Explorer. This experiment involved through Ethernet and Wireless of the Internet and 4G networks in e-learning. The signalling mechanism of this experiment has been created and implemented using JavaScript language along with MultiConnection libraries. In addition, an evaluation of quality of experience (QoE), resources, such as bandwidth consumption, and CPU performance was done. In this paper, a novel implementation was accomplished over e-learning using different networks, different browsers, many peers, opening one or many rooms concurrently, defining room initiator, sharing the information of the new user with participants, using user identification (user-id), and so on. Moreover, the paper also highlights the advantages and disadvantages of using WebRTC video conferencing.

Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) offers peer-to-peer communications without any plug-ins. However, WebRTC cannot provide scalability because of its method that depends on a single server or due to the resource limitations and network topology in the architectural of the WebRTC. This paper aims to design a real environment using MATLAB simulation tools to specify the limitations of resources in WebRTC for bi-directional video conferencing, such as CPU performance, bandwidth consumption and Quality of Experience (QoE) using different topologies such as mesh, star and hybrid (a combination of unidirectional/star & bi-directional/mesh). Moreover, several CPU cores like i3, i5, i7, Xeon, i9 and Xeon Phi, as well as bandwidths: 0.5, 1, 5, 10, 30, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 (Mb/s) were considered to achieve and expand the scalability. In this implementation, the factors of real-time implementation were used. Thus, the utilized measurements were already validated while MATLAB presents coefficient with 95% confidence bound. Additionally, this paper highlights the obstructions are preventing scalability in WebRTC using a centralized server. This illustration is beneficial for interested developers who intend to use WebRTC duplex video conferencing among undefined users and different topologies. Furthermore, our simulation-based' performance evaluation shows the efficiency of the hybrid topology in decreasing the bandwidth overhead and CPU load in WebRTC.
