Abstract:This article is a sociological analysis of the principles of primogeniture inBenin. It discusses the historical background of primogeniture in the Benin kingdom, examines the nature of the roles and rights of primogeniture in Benin prior to and after European contact, and evaluates changes in the system as a result of external contact.
