An evaluation of variation in published estimates of schizophrenia prevalence from 1990─2013: a systematic literature review

Abstract: BackgroundThere is a lack of consistency in findings across studies on the prevalence of schizophrenia, and no recent systematic review of the literature exists. The purpose of this study is to provide an updated systematic review of population-based prevalence estimates and to understand the factors that could account for this variation in prevalence estimates.MethodsMEDLINE, Embase, and PsycInfo databases were searched for observational studies describing schizophrenia prevalence in general populations from … Show more

“…When applying a 75% adherence rate, the number of prevalent patients was estimated at 48,042, corresponding to a crude prevalence rate in the population >15 years old of 0.57%. This estimate is in line with the results of the systematic review by Simeone et al (2015) [10] (0.52% in the European population in general).…”

When used as prescribed, antipsychotic medications are effective in reducing positive psychotic symptoms, with the aim of improving long-term functional outcomes and enhancing recovery.…”

“…The median incidence of this disease is reported to be 15.2 per 100,000 people (McGrath et al, 2008), and its median lifetime prevalence is estimated at 480 per 100,000 patients (Simeone et al, 2015). Moreover, schizophrenia is a major cause of disability (Warner, 2009), with approximately three-quarters of patients suffering an ongoing disability with relapses (Smith et al, 2010).…”
