An evolutionarily conserved coreceptor gene is essential for CLAVATA signaling inMarchantia polymorpha

Abstract: Growth and development of land plants are controlled by CLAVATA3/EMBRYO SURROUNDING REGION-related (CLE) family of peptide hormones. In contrast to the genetic diversity of CLE family in flowering plants, the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha possesses a minimal set of CLE, MpCLE1(TDIF homolog) and MpCLE2 (CLV3 homolog). MpCLE1 and MpCLE2 peptides exert distinct function at the apical meristem of M. polymorpha gametophyte via specific receptors, MpTDIF RECEPTOR (MpTDR) and MpCLAVATA1 (MpCLV1), respectively, both… Show more

“…Proliferation of the apical notch cell in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha is promoted by MpCLE2 peptide which acts from outside the stem cell domain via the receptor MpCLV1, while cell proliferation is confined by MpCLE1 peptide through a different receptor (Hata & Kyozuka, 2021;Hirakawa et al, 2019Hirakawa et al, , 2020Takahashi et al, 2021). Thus, antagonistic control of stem cell activities through diverse CLE peptides is conserved between distantly related land plants.…”

“…Broadly expressed CLE peptides were here found to restrict stem cell identity, and act in division plane control (Whitewoods et al, 2018).
