An Exact Solution of Interception Efficiency Over an Elliptical Fiber Collector

Abstract: An exact solution for the interception efficiency of a particle carried by potential flow over an elliptical fiber acting as the collector has been developed based on the Zhukovsky conversion. It is shown that the interception efficiency depends on fiber geometric properties such as size, aspect ratio, the orientation angle of the incoming flow, and the particle diameter. The results show that the noncircular collector shape can improve the interception efficiency significantly when compared to a circular coll… Show more

“…In terms of elliptical fibers, there are limited studies on the flow fields, capture efficiency, and pressure drop. Here we quote the studies of Raynor (2002) and Kirsh (2011) for flow fields and pressure drop and Raynor (2008), Regan and Raynor (2009) and Wang et al (2012b) for diffusional and interceptive efficiencies of single elliptical fiber. Recently, Wang et al (2014) in our research group obtained a series of empirical correction factors for the pressure drop and capture efficiency of elliptical fiber from the existing formulas of circular fiber.…”

“…Real fibrous filters are composed of fibers that they are randomly oriented in contrast with perpendicular the plane as supposed in the theoretical models. The fabric filter is widely applied due to its convenient, simple and general features [5]. Current researches in field of fabric filters focused on the filtering mechanisms, efficiency and pressure drop [5].…”

“…The fabric filter is widely applied due to its convenient, simple and general features [5]. Current researches in field of fabric filters focused on the filtering mechanisms, efficiency and pressure drop [5]. The base of the classic filtration theories is formed with Single fiber efficiency (SFE), which defines the efficiency of a single fiber that is placed in a cell [6].…”

“…There are already many researches on the flow field over ellipse, square and rectangular fibers [1][2][3][4][5], but little over arc plates. As non-circular fibers per unit volume can offer higher surface area than circular fibers and improve the filter performance greatly.…”
