An Experimental Study of Transition and Film Boiling Heat Transfer in Liquid-Saturated Porous Bed

Abstract: Experimental investigations of transition and film boiling in a liquid-saturated porous bed are reported. The porous bed contained in a vertical circular cylinder is made up of packed spherical beads whose diameters range from 1.0 to 16.5 mm, while the depth of the bed overlying the heating surface varies from 10 to 300 mm. Water and fluorocarbon refrigerants R-11 and R-113 are adopted as testing liquids. Special attention is focused on the effect of the diameter of spherical beads on boiling heat transfer in … Show more

“…The temperature and pressure of the vapor adjacent to the meniscus are T v and p v . When there are no glass beads present ( Bo → ∞ ), Fukusako et al's (1986) experimental results are consistent with the conventional pool boiling curve discussed in Section 10.2. The heat transfer mode is similar to boiling in a wicked surfaces -discussed in the preceding subsection -except that evaporation on the top of the porous medium does not have much effect on the formation and growth of the vapor bubbles.…”

“…A small, trapped, hemispherical vapor bubble with effective radius R b in the vicinity of the wall-wick interface is shown in Fig. Fukusako et al (1986) conducted an experimental study of the boiling of water, R-11 and R-113 saturated in packed beds of spherical beads with diameters ranging from 1.0 to 16.5 mm. The bubble as well as the liquid adjacent to the wall is at the wall temperature T w .…”

“…In the following, we ex amine the experimental results (Fukusako et al , 1986) that support these two asymptotic behaviors, i.e., Bo > 1, the highpermeability asymptote, and Ba ~ 1, the low-permeability asymptote. Then we discuss the low-permeability asymptote using a one-dimensional model (Sondergeld and Turcotte, 1977;Bau and Torrance, 1982;.…”

“…In the experiments of Fukusako et al (1986), packed beds of spheres (glass, steel, and aluminum) occupied by fluorocarbon refrigerants were heated from below to temperatures above saturation. Their results for the gl ass (Freon-11) system with a bed height of 80 mm and for four different particle sizes (Bond numbers) are given in figure 12.4.…”

“…Fukusako et al 27 described transition and film boiling on a liquid-saturated porous bed. They plotted the boiling curve for a porous medium without CHF; neither the wall temperature nor heat flux could maintain a steady state and both gradually increased.…”
