Externally-bonded FRP laminate is widely used in structural strengthening due to the many advantages of FRP materials. Further enhancement of the strengthening effect can be achieved by inducing prestress into the FRP laminate. However, FRP debonding is still a main issue of this strengthening method, especially the Intermediate Crack-induced debonding (IC debonding). To better understand the impact of FRP debonding on the strengthening effect, a series of parameter analyses were conducted in this study based on the fatigue life prediction model proposed by the authors. The proposed model involves the fatigue damage accumulation of components of the beam, the mutual interaction between each component, and the impact of FRP fatigue debonding. As a result, a stress threshold for preventing FRP fatigue debonding in strengthening the concrete beam was proposed, which aimed to avoid safety hazards caused by IC debonding in practical engineering.

Currently, many studies are devoted to the use of polymer composite materials to increase the strength and stability of concrete elements. In compressed reinforced concrete elements, the bearing capacity depends on the eccentricity of the external application of the external force and the corresponding stress-strain state, as well as the location and number of composite materials glued to the surface of the structure. The choice of a scheme for placing composite materials depending on the stress state of the structure is an urgent scientific problem. At the same time, the issue of central compression and the compression of columns with large eccentricities has been well studied. However, studies conducted in the range of average eccentricities often have conflicting results, which is the problem area of this study. The primary aim of this study was to increase the strength and stiffness of compressed reinforced concrete elements reinforced with composite materials, as well as a comparative analysis of the bearing capacity of ten different combinations of external longitudinal, transverse, and combined reinforcement. The results of testing 16 compressed columns under the action of various eccentricities of external load application (e0/h = 0; 0.16; 0.32) are presented. It is shown that the use of composite materials in strengthening structures increases the bearing capacity up to 41%, and the stiffness of the sections increases up to 30%. Based on the results of the study, recommendations are proposed for improving the calculation method for inflexible columns reinforced in the transverse direction, which take the work of concrete under the conditions of a three-dimensional stress state into consideration.

Upgrading historic structures is one of the most interesting applications of FRP in construction. The possibility to preserve construction technology and original structural conception after an intervention makes the use of FRP an interesting alternative for historic structures. Among these structures, historic bridges are frequently post-strengthened to increase load carrying capacity of structural elements, aiming to bear heavier commercial tra c. In such applications, the fatigue life tends to increase; however, this performance is not fully addressed, which can restrain the effective utilization of FRP in historic structures. Fatigue life becomes a crucial question since the lack of data regarding FRP poststrengthened elements leads to super cial analysis that considers the same S-N curves for different FRP systems and stress ranges, for example, besides other issues. Aiming to improve the fatigue life assessment of RC beams strengthened with FRP, this paper aims to adjust speci c S-N curves for different FRP systems and techniques. An extensive database, with experimental data gathered from the literature, has been used to adjust linear regression models to characterize the large scatter between the results of fatigue tests from different sources. Distinct fatigue models have been developed considering three post-strengthening categories: externally bonded reinforcement with FRP strips/sheets and NSMR. Different declivities have been found for the adjusted fatigue life models, highlighting speci c aspects of each category. The declivity of the fatigue curves accurately represents the fatigue behavior of FRPstrengthened RC beams and can be used to support proper post-strengthening design to avoid future unnecessary interventions.
