An experimental study on the effect of nano-clay addition on mechanical and water absorption behaviour of jute fibre reinforced epoxy composites

Abstract: This study deals with the investigation of the mechanical and water absorption properties of jute fibre reinforced epoxy composites prepared by using hand layup method. The effects of fibre length (10, 20, 30 and 40 mm), fibre weight fraction (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%), concentration of NaOH treatment (5% and 10%) and nano-clay addition (1, 3, 5 and 7 wt%) on the aforementioned properties were determined. Morphological characterisation was performed for the tensile and flexural fractured surface of the sp… Show more

“…The graph indicates that the tensile strength and tensile modulus of both types of composites increased, when the nanoclay filler was incorporated up to 5 wt%, but then subsided after further addition of nanoclay. The similar trend was also observed by Ramakrishnan et al during their investigation. The effect of the nanoclay content within the developed composites can be explained as due to the homogeneous dispersion of the nanofiller in the matrix epoxy, which plays a vital role in improving the tensile properties.…”

“…The water absorption pattern for NFCs follows Fickian behavior at room temperature where the water uptake process is linear initially and approaches saturation state after sufficient time duration . The kinetics and diffusion mechanism in the material can be ascertained using the following relation: MtM=ktn …”

“…Water absorption test: Water absorption tests were carried out on three prismatic samples with size 64 Â 12.7 Â 3 mm 3 for each case according to ASTM D 570-98 standard, under different climatic conditions of 10 C, 30 C and 60 C. The samples were taken out from the bath at regular intervals of time, that is for every 1 h, and the water content present on the specimen surface was wiped out with a dry cloth and then weighed in a high precision digital balance. The water absorption in the weight percentage (%M) was calculated by using the following equation [32][33][34][35].…”

“…where M t represents the moisture absorption at time t, M m indicated the saturated moisture absorption and k and n are the constants. In Fickian model, the diffusion coefficient (D) was one of the important parameters which show the ability of water molecules to penetrate into the samples and it can be determined by using the following equation [33,34].…”
