An Exploratory Study of the Validity of Visual Fit Assessment From Three-Dimensional Scans

Abstract: 3D scans are considered to be potentially useful visual analysis tool, but there have been few studies regarding the validity of 3D scans as a tool for visual analysis. We investigated this by comparing results from fit analyses using live models with those using 3D scans of the same models. Professionals from the apparel industry provided feedback on the process of 3D scan fit analyses and suggested ways to improve the process. Results from different areas of the body showed different levels of reliability. I… Show more

“…Garment fit is influenced by fashion, social, and cultural norms (Petrova & Ashdown, 2012), as well as by individual preferences (Alexander, Connell, & Presley, 2005;Ashdown & O'Connell, 2006;Bye, LaBat, & Delong, 2006;Kohn & Ashdown, 1998). “…This might be attributed to that both designers and manufacturers do not apply standard sizing measurements. In addition to size, fit is evaluated through different attributes including posture, fabric drape, and complex body proportions (Song and Ashdown, 2010). It suggests that the information provided by retailers weather it is written, pictures, or videos, were not enough in reducing consumers' concerns.…”

“…During shopping online for apparel consumers may experience more difficulty regarding fit and size because of their inability to try on clothing before purchase. What makes the situation even more difficult is that clothing fit is determined not only by fit but other elements related to posture, and complex body proportions (Song & Ashdown, 2010). While shopping in a brick and mortar stores, consumers can physically try on garments and make visual and alive evaluation through examining the body-related information (Rosa, Garbarino & Malter, 2003).…”

“…One problem with all current measuring methods used to construct garment patterns is abstracting the garment shape to provide fit and comfort, but not replicate the body exactly (Song & Ashdown, 2010). While it does seem possible to create an accurate representation of the body, it is necessary to go beyond the body measurements and determine the ideal relationship between the body and the garment.…”
