An Immersive Virtual Sailing on the 18th-Century Ship Le Boullongne

Abstract: The work presented in this article is the result of collaboration between historians and computer scientists whose goal was the digital reconstitution of Le Boullongne, an 18th-century merchant ship of La Compagnie des Indes orientales.1 This ship has now disappeared and its reconstitution aims at understanding onboard living conditions. Three distinct research laboratories have participated in this project so far. The first, a department of naval history, worked on historical documents, especially the logbook… Show more

“…In addition to the three themes, category 'other' includes two cases: Haavik (2016) inquired AR tools in surgeons' work and Barreau et al (2015) covered a VR experience of an 18 th century merchant ship built for historical analysis. We excluded medical area from our search, as uses of XR in medical field constitute a specific, own field of research with its specific questions and emphases (see e.g.…”

“…In addition, accessing previously inaccessible could mean accessing space-located knowledge in real time (Anastassova and Burkhardt, 2009). For instance, to Barreau et al (2015), the technical realization of historical and naval information on virtual sailing enabled historical analysis from multiple aspects, i.e. general living conditions and social actions.…”

“…To our knowledge, few scientific dissemination experiments, where the 3D object would have the same role as a scientific article, have been carried out. The use of immersive devices allows for exchanges with many researchers (Barreau et al, 2015) but without being open to autonomous exploration, reading and criticism. The work of producing a 3D model for heritage is often disseminated to the scientific community through scientific articles.…”

“…Others, such as the Mazatos shipwreck in Cyprus, which started excavation in 2007 using manual 3D modelling and visualization in a large CAVE display (Katsouri et al 2015) and the Vrouw Maria shipwreck in Finland which has used multibeam sonar, laser scanning of ship models, manual 3D modelling, and VR simulation using Unity (Reunanen et al 2015). Also notable, the Le Boullongne virtual sailing ship simulation has been developed from the ship's plans and unlike the others listed above, is not a wreck site simulation (Barreau et al 2015).…”
