An immunohistochemical study of abnormal keratinocyte proliferation in molluscum contagiosum

Abstract: These results indicate that molluscum contagiosum lesions exhibit an increased proliferation rate of keratinocytes, which is likely to be partially counteracted by accumulation of p53.

“…2,17 Immunohistochemical studies have shown that the basal keratinocytes of MC lesions have a higher Ki67 proliferative index than normal skin-matched controls. 22 These prior studies suggest that the basal keratinocytes in MC lesions probably reflect the earliest-infected cells, and our findings confirm the distinct histopathological changes observed in these cells.…”

“…Ultrastructural studies have demonstrated that follicular epithelium infected with MCV first shows viral cores in the basal keratinocytes, and histopathological studies have shown that the characteristic MC cytoplasmic inclusions progressively enlarge as they rise through the epidermis before developing into true MBs . “…[75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84] Disseminated lesions can occur in HTLV-1 infection as well. 87 Attenuated ubiquitination of molluscum bodies has been reported in a patient with multiple lesions in the setting of malignant lymphoma. 86 This involves the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS).…”

“…1 It has an incubation period of 6-8 weeks and is usually self-limited in immunocompetent individuals. 3 The disease generally manifests as multiple 2-3 mm, waxy, shiny, pearly white button-like umbilicated papules, especially over the face, trunk and genital region 4 ; however, it can occur anywhere on the skin. 5 Owing to their characteristic presentation, most lesions are clinically diagnosed; nonetheless, they may deceptively present as giant forms, 2 in which case they may be suspected of being neoplastic and hence subjected for histopathologic examination.…”
