An impending inhibitor useful for the oil and gas production industry: Weight loss, electrochemical, surface and quantum chemical calculation

Abstract: The influence of a Schiff base namely N,N′-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(1-(4-methoxyphenyl) methanimine) (PM) on the corrosion of J55 and N80 steel in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution saturated with CO2 was evaluated using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), contact angle, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). Potentiodynamic polarization results suggested that the inhibitor… Show more

“…The results reveal that both mono‐RL and di‐RL have parallel reactivity. As reported previously, the Fermi level of iron is −5.177 eV (Singh et al, 2017). The E HOMO values of mono‐RL and di‐RL are −6.853 and −6.841 eV, respectively, near the Fermi level of iron.…”

“…Several other types of organic compounds, [42a,43,45b,c,79h,j,86,88e,122,137] which cannot be categorized under the above‐mentioned groups, are also reported to act as CIs for steels in a CO 2 environment and will be discussed in the following paragraphs. The main findings for these organic compounds are presented in Table S8 in Supplementary Material.…”

“…The studies reporting on the corrosion inhibition of these compounds were conducted for steel samples immersed for 1 h–20 days in either CO 2 ‐saturated NaCl solution/brine, [42a,43,79h,j,88e,137–139] or CO 2 ‐saturated simulated oilfield waters, [45b,c,86,108,131e] in a temperature range from room temperature to 80 °C. The corrosion inhibition of 4,6‐diamino‐2‐(benzylthio)pyrimidine was investigated for N80 steel immersed in CO 2 ‐saturated simulated oilfield water [86] with 8 MPa CO 2 partial pressure.…”

“…Figure 3 represents the corrosion rate and the inhibition efficiency analysis of API X120 steel immersed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution saturated with CO 2 without and with (25, 50, 75 and 100 μmol L −1 ) of PEI corrosion inhibitor for different exposure time at room temperature. The depicted figures were derived from the weight loss measurement as the corrosion rate (CR) was calculated according to the equations below 41…”
