An improved and extended internally consistent thermodynamic dataset for phases of petrological interest, involving a new equation of state for solids

Abstract: The thermodynamic properties of 254 end-members, including 210 mineral end-members, 18 silicate liquid end-members and 26 aqueous fluid species are presented in a revised and updated internally consistent thermodynamic data set. The PVT properties of the data set phases are now based on a modified Tait equation of state (EOS) for the solids and the Pitzer & Sterner (1995) equation for gaseous components. Thermal expansion and compressibility are linked within the modified Tait EOS (TEOS) by a thermal pressure … Show more

“…Phases modelled as pure end-members are quartz, rutile, titanite and aqueous fluid (H 2 O). All mineral abbreviations are from (Holland and Powell, 2011) except for titanite (ttn). Bulk rock compositions were determined at ALS Laboratories (Ireland) using their ME-ICP06 analytical package.…”

“…Modelling was conducted in the NCKFMASHTO system-applicable for mafic to intermediate compositions )-using the internally consistent thermodynamic database (ds63) of (Holland and Powell, 2011) and the THERMOCALC (v.3.45) software package (Powell et al, 1998). Activity-composition models are from Green et al (2016).…”

“…The reaction is strongly dependent on H 2 O activity: at a H 2 O = 0.5 gives T = 707 °C (P = 400 MPa) with T increasing with increasing a H 2 O . (This and the following reactions were generated, and P-T-X conditions calculated using Thermocalc 3.31 (Holland & Powell 2011) and AX software for end-member activities (Table 2)). …”
