An Improved Polling Scheme for PCF MAC Protocol

Abstract: The design of media access control (MAC) protocol that can efficiently support the real-time applications in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) requires that the MAC layer provide strict delay guarantees for sensitive traffic, the Point Coordination Function (PCF) with Round Robin (RR) polling scheme has been included in IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol to achieve this objective. This paper uses two-level-polling scheme to improve the performance of RR scheme, and the closed form expressions for the mean cyclic peri… Show more

“…Some undesirable poll occurring will result in the wasting of bandwidth if the AP polls some clients without data to send or receive. Therefore, two-class priority client polling mechanism based on queuing theory is proposed in some literatures [19][20][21]. However, due to the side-effects of PCF, they work inefficiently in multiple APs cochannel deployment and high density WLANs.…”

“…Point Coordination Function (PCF) is an optional access method specified by the original IEEE 802.11 standard [10]. PCF is supported only by infrastructure-mode networks because it uses a Point Coordination (PC) that resides in the AP to establish which station can transmit.…”

“…An analytical model was derived to quickly evaluate the throughput performance in the presence of both the inter-RAU hidden nodes (HN) problems and fiberdelay difference. Regarding the PCF mechanism, previous studies mainly focused on the performance in traditional WLAN (non-RoF) [8][9][10]. The most different character of the PCF is that it achieves coordination by a centralized algorithm Fig.1 The architecture of a simulcast RoF-based WLAN distributed antenna system where the AP runs the algorithm, while the DCF has a distributed algorithm run by all the stations.…”
