In this paper, an efficient and adjustable visual image encryption scheme is proposed by combining a 6D hyperchaotic system, compressive sensing, and Bezier curve embedding. First, the plain image is sparse by discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Then, the sparse image is encrypted and compressed through game-of-life (GOL) hybrid scrambling and compressive sensing into a cipher image. Next, Bezier curve embedding is utilized to embed the cipher image into the carrier image in wavelet domain. After these operations, the final visually meaningful steganographic image is generated. Additionally, the frequency-domain information of the plain image is used to generate the initial values of the 6D hyperchaotic system in scrambling process, which makes the proposed encryption scheme able to effectively resist the chosen-plaintext attacks (CPA) and the knownplaintext attacks (KPA). Moreover, our scheme exhibits excellent adjustable performance compared with existing related schemes. Ultimately, simulation results and comprehensive performance analyses demonstrate that the scheme proposed in this paper has high decryption quality, visual security, robustness, and operating efficiency.

Due to advancements in technology, digital images are widely used in various applications like medical field, military communication, remote sensing, etc. These images may contain sensitive and confidential information. Therefore, images are required to be protected from unauthorized access. Many image protection techniques have been proposed in past years. The most common technique to protect the images is encryption. In this technique, a secret key and an encryption algorithm are used to change the plain image into an encrypted image. The encrypted image looks like a noisy image and can easily attracts the attacker's attention. If image gets captured and stacked, sensitive information can be revealed. In this regard, Visually Meaningful Encrypted Image (VMEI) technique is developed, which initially encrypts the original image and then hides it into a reference image. The final encrypted image looks like a normal image. Hence, VMEI technique provides more security as compared to simple image encryption techniques. Therefore, a systematic survey on existing VMEI techniques is presented in this paper. The VMEI techniques are divided into different categories based on their characteristics. Moreover, this paper elaborates and investigates the improvements and analyses performed on VMEI techniques based on various evaluation parameters. These evaluation parameters are divided into different categories such as security attacks, encryption key attacks, quality analysis, and noise attacks. Finally, this paper discusses the potential applications and the future challenges of VMEI techniques.

A visually meaningful image encryption scheme with an asymmetric structure based on the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and Schur decomposition is proposed in this study. First, the RSA algorithm is used to generate the initial values for the chaotic system to produce the random sequence. Then, both scrambling and diffusion operations are performed on the plain image to obtain the preencrypted image. Moreover, the Schur decomposition is applied on the preencrypted plain image to obtain the upper triangular and orthogonal matrices. Second, the cover image is scrambled followed by a DWT operation. Four subbands are then formed, namely, LL, HL, LH, and HH. Finally, the former upper triangular matrix and orthogonal matrix are embedded into subbands LH and HH produced by the cover image. After the application of the inverse DWT and inverse scrambling operation, the final visually meaningful cover image embedded with a secret plain image can be obtained. No one can identify any useful information about the plain image from the final embedded cover image, nor can anybody know that there is any hidden secret image. Experimental simulations show that the normalized correlation values between the original cover image and the final visually meaningful cover image are approximately 0.9997. Therefore, the proposed encryption scheme is imperceptible for secret image communications.
