An information product approach for total information awareness

Abstract: Abstract--To fight terrorism successfully, the quality of data must be considered to avoid garbage-in-garbage-out. Research has shown that data quality (DQ) goes beyond accuracy to include dimensions such as believability, timeliness, and accessibility. In collecting, processing, and analyzing a much broader array of data than we do currently, therefore, a comprehensive approach must be developed to ensure that DQ is incorporated in determining the most probable current or future scenario for preemption, natio… Show more

“…Strong and colleagues (1997) discuss a methodology for reasoning about information quality through process and task analysis. A comprehensive overview of information & data quality assessment tools and methodologies is given in (Wang et al, 2003). Motro, Anokhin & Acar (2004) and Naumann, Leser & Freytag (1999) introduce techniques for quality-based evaluation of query results and source selection in a multi-database environment.…”

“…Taking this approach to the extreme is to leverage total information awareness [34] to construct a behavior model of the content creator both within and outside of the digital community. Such behavior model is often stitched together from spatial, temporal, and spatiotemporal information that is publicly available and/or within the digital community.…”

“…A key lesson from recent research in information quality is that information 1 must be managed as a product (Kahn et al, 2002;Langley et al, 1996;Wang et al, 1998Wang et al, , 2003Wang, 1998). To manage information as a product, the entire information manufacturing system must be understood and managed accordingly.…”

“…To manage information as a product, the entire information manufacturing system must be understood and managed accordingly. The data production map has been conceptualised (Ballou et al, 1998;Lee et al, 2002;Pierce, 2001;Wang et al, 2001Wang et al, , 2003 as a critical tool to operationalise managing the entire information manufacturing system. To the best of our knowledge, this study is one of the first attempts to develop and use the data production map in an actual organisational setting.…”
