An Innovative Solid-State Micro-Anaerobic Digestion Process to Valorize Food Waste: Technical Development Constraints and Consequences on Biological Performances

Abstract: To face the increase of waste production and meet the energy demand of urban areas, municipal waste management systems should be rethought. Innovative solutions such as decentralised small-scale anaerobic digestion could be developed. This work presents the design, operation and performances of a new micro-scale anaerobic digester (AD) developed to degrade food waste (FW) in urban areas i.e. highly compact and with low water and energy demand. To meet these objectives, the new micro-scale AD is a semi-continuo… Show more

“…This technology makes anaerobic digestion a compact process that requires low water and energy. A quantity of 143 L/kg methane was produced via the solid-state microanaerobic digestion process, which is planned to be improved to increase its applicability and optimize its process conditions . Another popular biofuel is bioalcohol, which is considered as an emerging alternative liquid fuel, because of its petroleum-like characteristics .…”

“…Moreover, anaerobic digesters should be built as much as compactly in structure to reduce footprint and vertical position to take advantage of the gravity to mix and move the digested matter instead of using mechanical devices (Degueurce et al, 2022).…”

“…A simplification of the technology is required, and the design of compact reactors capable of operating a high-solid configuration and low water demand is needed. One approach is provided by Degueurce et al [64]. However, methane yields need to be improved before decentralized digestion technology may be considered as a practical solution for waste treatment and enhancing local energy production.…”
