Bondable fibre reinforced composite posts have gained popularity over the years for reinforcement of endodontically treated teeth. Success rate of these posts has been attributed to their low elastic modulus, resistance to high fatigue, excellent light conductivity etc. This study aimed to evaluate the Fibre-reinforced composite posts among different teeth and to know its association with the number of walls remaining. Data of 233 patients for whom FRC posts were placed at the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics was obtained from the Dental archives of Saveetha Dental College, Chennai. The type of tooth and number of walls present among age groups and gender were studied retrospectively. The results of the study showed that the use of FRC posts had a male predilection (53.65%) and 31-40 years was the most common age group among patients. A most common tooth was 21 (22.3%), followed by 11 (20.6%) and the least preferred teeth for FRC posts were 52 and 53 (0.4% each). It was observed that tooth type and the number of walls present had no association (p=0.261). Most prevalent number of coronal walls remaining in the tooth that underwent FRC were 2 walls (51.5%). The study draws attention to the fact that use of FRC posts has gained popularity over the years and there is a significant evolution for newer post systems to reduce the failure rate of post endodontic treatment with post and core systems. Since fibre-reinforced systems are incorporated into clinical practice more frequently, there is a need for various clinical studies evaluating the success rate despite the high number of laboratory studies pertaining to the characteristics of fibre posts.

Background/Aim: Root canal treatment (RCT) is one of the most common endodontic procedures for which patients visit the dentist. Patient's knowledge, awareness, and attitude regarding root canal treatment are an interesting problem in everyday dentistry. Therefore, the study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, awareness, and attitude of patients coming for endodontic treatment. Methods: Questionnaire surveys were carried out in a group of 209 patients, including queries characterizing their knowledge, awareness, and attitude towards the RCT - their experiences, expectations, potential problems, and management expenses. Results: Exploring the knowledge of individuals? concerning RCT, it was noticed that 51% of the surveyed patients in the past had experienced endodontics treatment. 52% of participants reported that they know the charges of the RCT, 50% of them said that the price was sufficient to the difficulty of the process. The study confirmed that a large number of people still prefer specialists to perform the RCT (47%). Conclusion: An enhancement of knowledge and awareness of people about the RCT has been observed, as well as a need of providing more information to patients about endodontics and benefits of saving teeth.

Effect of GuttaClear on postoperative pain after root canal retreatment: a randomized clinical trial

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate postoperative pain after non-surgical root canal retreatment with or without GuttaClear. Methods Sixty participants were randomly distributed in this non-inferiority trial into two parallel single-blinded experimental groups (Group1: non-solvent, Group2: solvent). After root canal retreatment, the participants completed questionnaires using direct (numerical rating scales) and indirect (number of analgesics taken) measurements of postoperative pain at immediate, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h post-retreatment. The predisposing postoperative pain factors were recorded and analysed using Generalized Estimating Equations to identify correlated factors (α=0.05). Results The pain incidence was not significantly different between the groups at any time point. The highest incidence of postoperative pain occurred immediately after retreatment (35%) and then decreased to 15% at 24 h (P<0.05). The number of participants requiring analgesics was 6.67% in the non-solvent group and 9.99% in the solvent group which were similar between the groups. Patients with a history of previous postoperative pain were 21.6-fold more likely to have postoperative pain than those without (P<0.05). Conclusion There was no difference in postoperative pain or analgesics required after root canal retreatment with or without using GuttaClear. This study is registered in ClinicalTrial.gov (NCT04326998).
