An Instant Donning Multi-Channel EEG Headset (with Comb-Shaped Dry Electrodes) and BCI Applications

Abstract: We developed a new type of electroencephalogram (EEG) headset system with comb-shaped electrodes that enables the wearer to quickly don and utilize it in daily life. Two models that can measure EEG signals using up to eight channels have been implemented. The electrodes implemented in the headsets are similar to a comb and are placed quickly by wiping the hair (as done with a comb) using the headset. To verify this headset system, donning time was measured and three brain computer interface (BCI) application e… Show more

“…Various inexpensive devices were tested to measure and analyze EEG recordings [ 110 , 111 , 112 , 113 ]. One of the first commercial, inexpensive devices applied for EEG was a headset from NeuroSky Mind-Wave, which was supposed to capture different levels of EEG [ 114 , 115 ].…”

“…MindWave Mobile and Yband also stand over other numerous inexpensive headsets, mainly due to their price and reliability. However, their implementation is very limited as they are capable of measuring from only one or two electrodes placed on the frontal lobe [ 111 ].…”

“…The BCI Systems can be divided into the two main categories: invasive and noninvasive [3,82]. Most of the EEG-based BCI systems rely on the listed below paradigms [15,64,70,[83][84][85][86][87][88]]:…”

“…Most of the BCI research is focused on increasing the information transfer rate (ITR), essentially increasing the throughput of the bridge between brain and device. Depending on the signal acquisition methods, Electroencephalography (EEG) based BCIs are gaining increased attention due to non-invasiveness and practical EEG headsets available on the market [6]. Research in the field of wearable sensors for EEG measurement systems for BCIs is critical for the expansion of BCIs.…”

“…Research in the field of wearable sensors for EEG measurement systems for BCIs is critical for the expansion of BCIs. In [6], researchers introduced two multichannel EEG headsets in which all electrodes easily reach the scalp, and no preparation is required. In EEG based BCI applications, there are four main signal classes, namely slow cortical potentials (SCP), sensorimotor rhythms (SMR), P300 evoked potentials and visual evoked potentials (VEP) [1,2,3,5,7].…”
