An Integrated biomarker approach for explaining the potency of exogenous glucose on transportation induced stress in Labeo rohita fingerlings

Abstract: Transportation of fish seed is a complex phenomenon associated with multiple kinds of stressors that simultaneously affect the fish in a confined environment, causing stress and mortality. The present study investigated the stress-relieving effect of exogenous glucose as a water additive in different concentrations (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4%) during simulated transportation (12 h) of L. rohita fingerlings. The integrated biomarker response (IBR) index is a holistic tool to determine the optimum dose of exogenous… Show more

“…C. catla produces around 6 % of overall aquaculture production, and it ranks seventh among fish species produced in the world (Yearbook, 2018). There are numerous benefits of its farming are high commercial value, fast growth rate, the texture of meat, consumer demand, and the acceptability of artificial diet ( Biswal et al, 2021 ). It shows higher palatability for a plant-based diet ( Mandal and Ghosh, 2019 ).…”

“…The significant increase in the levels of glucose indirectly indicated the release of stress hormones, such as cortisol and epinephrine, upon FFC-induced stress [ 23 ]. FFC is known to be hepatotoxic and toxic to renal tissues [ 11 , 24 ], hence, the elevated levels of serum ALT, ALP and creatinine.…”

“…The loss of membrane structure may cause the discharge of cellular components into the extracellular environment, as evidenced by the oxidative stress data of the current investigation. Despite its primary mode of action on the inhibition of protein synthesis on bacterial ribosomes, FFC has been shown to inhibit a variety of other cellular processes, including ATPases [ 5 ], compromising its normal functioning in gills [ 23 ] and, thus, threatening ionic homeostasis, enzymatic activity and cell membrane integrity [ 4 ].…”

“…Glucose is one of the sources of energy supply in organisms. During stress, glycolysis and gluconeogenesis occur in the fish body to provide glucose and energy [ 71 ]. In this study, the glycolytic pathway in the crucian carp kidney was slightly affected at the exposure concentrations of 20 mmol/L NaHCO 3 ( p > 0.05).…”
