An integrated method for designing modular products

Abstract: Many recent modular design methods and approaches have focused on the modularization process – decomposition and composition. This paper suggests an integrated methodology that includes additional tools and stages for a complete modular architecture design. The borders of the modular design process are expanded by adding strategic issues, appropriateness to modularity, degree of modularity and modularity strategies, in an operationalized manner. The methodology presents a “requirements analysis‐ decomposition‐… Show more

“…Alguns estudos (ASAN et al, 2004;MORRIS;DONNELLY, 2006) mostram que a introdução e gestão da modularidade não é simples. Nesse sentido, esse trabalho realiza um estudo descritivo sobre o uso da modularidade em empresas montadoras e seus fornecedores para verificar se os aspectos identificados na literatura (Quadro 1) são concordantes ou discordantes com a realidade das empresas estudadas.…”

“…Moreover, one can obtain a family of such exercisers, for active or passive mobilization of different segments, designed in several dimensions, able to be used by a large range of patients, in a wide range of exercisers. There are few advantages of modular design, [13]: reduced number of manufactured parts for a product family, parallel manufacture of modules, faster assembly, easy maintenance, flexibility in component reuse, costs savings in inventory and logistics. “…We choose the modulebased family design as the most adequate approach. As it is known, the modular design conducts to following advantages [1]: the complex operations are organized more efficiently by decomposing complex systems into simpler sub-systems; the number of parts manufactured for a product family is significantly reduced; the structure can be quickly reconfigured in an increased number of variants, parallel manufacture of modules, faster assembly, easy maintenance, flexibility in component reuse, costs savings in inventory and logistics.…”
