An introduction to agent-based modeling modeling natural, social, and engineered complex systems with NetLogo: a review

Abstract: OverviewThe advent of fast and widespread computational resources has enabled the work on rather new field of knowledge "complex systems" and to analyze them. In order to study the complex systems, a methodology called agent-based modeling has arisen. Although there is considerable diversity in the domain of computational modeling, there are only a handful of books in this area. Existing relevant books include (Railsback and Grimm 2011;Salamon 2011; Niazi and Hussain 2012; Banos et al. 2015; Hamill and Gilber… Show more

“…Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS) is a methodological science for studying complex systems, and is associated with many other fields [16]. ABMS is centered on "agents" [17]. It is formulated around the creation of a set of objects (called "agents") that are placed in an environment and have personalized attributes and rules that interact with the environment and other agents [18].…”

“…91 Table 2 outlines different types of health assets and the direct effects on clinical outcomes. 92-99 Although several items of SF cannot be improved in a timely manner or at all, providing basic social support has been found to be effective in enabling health-related behavioral changes compared with usual care in a study of frail older patients. 100 Three techniques may improve SF: (1) instructions on how to perform a behavior (eg, follow a heathier diet), (2) adding objects to an environment (eg, a medication dispenser), and (3) restructuring the physical environment (eg, making housing modifications to reduce fall risks).…”

“…Z ={QT, PN,...,MC} -a set of mathematical schemes that underlie this or that simulation system (queue theory, Petri nets, Markov chains, graph theory, etc.). Thus, a multi-model approach can be used to study business processes [10], namely, the business process model is transformed into a simulation model, which is based on a particular mathematical scheme. The transformation is performed using DSM (Domain Specific Modeling) Meta Language software [11,12].…”
