An inventory model for imperfect production system with rework and shortages

Abstract: This paper considers a production inventory model with planned backorders for a single product. The product is manufactured in a single stage manufacturing system. The manufacturing system generates imperfect quality products. All these defective products are reworked in the same cycle. This paper develops two inventory models for two operational policies. The first policy covers the case that the rework is done and the shortages are not permitted. The second policy covers the case that the rework is done and … Show more

“…These imperfect-quality items can sometimes be reworked and repaired, thus reducing the overall production costs significantly. To achieve this objective, Munusami and Periyasamy [59] devised two distinct inventory models corresponding to two operational policies. The first policy addresses situations where rework is carried out and shortages are strictly prohibited, whereas the second policy accounts for scenarios where rework is conducted and shortages are allowed.…”

“…Since then, thousands of research articles have been written by extending the basic idea of production‐inventory modeling into stochastic programming, goal programming, several search algorithms, possibility/necessity distributions, and so forth. Wee et al 24 and Sanjai and Periyasamy 25 discussed an optimal inventory model for items with imperfect quality and shortage backordering. Li et al 26 developed a deteriorating production‐inventory model where the imperfect items can be reworked.…”
