An investigation into the erroneous access and egress behaviours of building users and their impact upon building performance

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to investigate the behaviour of building users and how this impacts upon building energy performance. Specifically, the work examines the behavioural traits of able-bodied users of a large higher education building who erroneously access and egress the building using doorways intended for disabled users. Design/methodology/approach An inductive methodological approach is adopted that uses grounded theory to devise new insights into building users’ access and egress habits. Structured … Show more

“…An interpretivist philosophical design is implemented for this research using published literature as the unit of analysis (Roberts et al, 2019), where interpretivism allows for the researcher's individual nuance and variability in their interaction with (in this case literature) to interpret and/or comprehend new knowledge, perspectives and generate wisdom (Dixon et al, 2020). Consequently, this philosophical stance is broadly categorised as being an inductive paradigm (Al-Saeed et al, 2019).…”

“…Al-Saeed et al, 2020;Mohamed et al, 2020) and empirical (cf. Edwards et al, 2020) epistemological design was adopted for this research to analyse primary quantitative data (Dixon et al, 2020). Post-positivism was achieved via the use of perception data collated via a structured questionnaire that was rigorously analysed using summary and inferential statisticssuch being an established technique used throughout construction management literature (cf.…”

“…To analyse the perceptions and experiences of educators, this research adopted a post-positivist philosophical design (Roberts et al 2019) to analyse qualitative primary data collecting from a cross sectional time horizon. This broad approach has been used extensively within construction literature, for example: Dixon et al (2020) undertook an investigation into the erroneous access and egress behaviours of building users and their impact upon building performance; Al-Saeed et al (2020) developed an automated manufacturing procedures using BIM digital objects; and Mohamed et al (2019) explored industry practitioners' knowledge of fire prevention following the Grenfell disaster.…”
