An investigation into whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (Snps) of OPRM1 influence on opioid addiction

Abstract

Opioid is one of the main components used in many pain pills, such as fentanyl. It can selectively inhibit the impulse transmission of some excitatory nerves by acting on opioid receptors in central nervous tissues and relieving pain. However, opioid is easy to be addicted. Opioid addiction has become a serious social issue. The main aim of this dissertation is to investigate the influences of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) of OPRM1 on opioid addiction. In this essay, three methodologies are used to conclude whether SNPs of OPRM1 influence opioid addiction. The first method uses sample statistics to hypothesize and estimate the population by finding out the confidence interval for the difference between two population proportions by randomly choosing 500 European subjects and sequencing the OPRM1 SNPs. In the second method, an oxford nanopore is used to determine the specific sequence by creating a characteristic disruption in the electrical current. In the third method, house mice's zygotes are first developed in vitro. Then, house mice learn how to self-administer in the vapor chambers.
