Iron and steel slags from legacy and modern operations in the Chicago-Gary area of Illinois and Indiana, USA, are predominantly composed of Ca (10–44 wt. % CaO), Fe (0.3–28 wt. % FeO), and Si (10–44 wt. % SiO2), with generally lesser amounts of Al (<1–15 wt. % Al2O3), Mg (2–11 wt. % MgO), and Mn (0.3–9 wt. % MnO). Mineralogy is dominated by Ca ± Mg ± Al silicates, Fe ± Ca oxides, Ca-carbonates, and high-temperature SiO2 phases. Chromium and Mn concentrations in most samples may be environmentally significant based on comparison with generic soil contaminant guidelines. However, simulated weathering tests suggest these elements are present in generally insoluble phases making their use in water treatment applications possible; however, the generation of high pH and alkaline solutions may be an issue. As for possible water treatment applications, batch and flow-through experiments document effective removal of phosphate from synthetic solutions for nearly all slag samples. Air-cooled fine fractions (<10 mm) of modern slag were most effective; other types, including modern granulated, modern air-cooled coarse fractions (>10 mm), and legacy slag removed phosphate, but to a lesser degree. An additional water treatment application is the use of slag to neutralize acidic waters. Most slag samples are extremely alkaline and have high net neutralization potentials (NNP) (400–830 kg CaCO3/t), with the highest approximately equivalent to 80% of the neutralization potential of calcite. Overall, phosphate removal capacity and NNP correlate positively with total Ca content and the dissolution of Ca minerals facilitates secondary Ca phosphate formation and consumes acid during hydrolysis. Utilizing locally available slag to treat waste or agricultural waters in this region may be a higher value alternative than use in construction, potentially offsetting restoration costs to degraded legacy areas and decreasing steel manufacturers’ current waste footprint.

Steel slag has been proven to be an effective environment remediation media for acid neutralization, and a potential aid to mitigate acid mine drainage (AMD) in passive treatment process. But its acid neutralization capacity (ANC) is frequently inhibited by precipitate after a period of time, while the characteristic of the formation process are unclear yet. In this work, ANC of the SS sample was tested using simulated AMD (H2SO4, 0.1M) and real AMD. Steel slag and AMD has been characterized on pH, ANC, as well as Ca, Mg, Al, Mg-bearing ingredients. Microscopic properties characterization and neutralization experiment results shown that Ca-bearing constitutes leaching and sulfate formation were the two main categories reactions throughout the neutralization process. A prominent transition point of the two kind reactions was selected at 40 % of the neutralization process. Microscopic properties characterization indicated Ca3SiO5 (C3S) played a dominant role among Ca-bearing components in alkaline releasing stage for the present sample. Morphology, pore distribution, composition, surface area and other microscopic properties of the neutralized slag were significantly changed by the crystallized CaSO4 precipitates in sulfate formation stage, which hindered the alkaline releasing behaviors gradually. Neutralization experiments conducted by real AMD suggested that the steel slag ANC property was also influenced by the contained high concentration metal ion due to the precipitate reactions except for sulfate formation reactions.

Steel slag has been proven to be an effective environment remediation media for acid neutralization, and a potential aid to mitigate acid mine drainage (AMD). Yet its acid neutralization capacity (ANC) is frequently inhibited by precipitate after a period of time, while the characteristics of the precipitate formation process are unclear yet. In this study, ANC for basic oxygen steel slag was conducted by neutralization experiments with dilute sulfuric acid (0.1 M) and real AMD. Some partially neutralized steel slag samples were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy combined with an energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), and N2 adsorption tests to investigate the potential formation process of the precipitate. The results indicated that Ca-bearing constitutes leaching and sulfate formation were two main reactions throughout the neutralization process. A prominent transition turning point from leaching to precipitate was at about 40% of the neutralization process. Tricalcium silicate (Ca3SiO5) played a dominant role in the alkalinity-releasing stage among Ca-bearing components, while the new-formed well crystalline CaSO4 changed the microstructure of steel slag and further hindered alkaline components releasing. For steel slag of 200 mesh size, the ANC value for the steel slag sample was 8.23 mmol H+/g when dilute sulfate acid was used. Neutralization experiments conducted by real AMD confirmed that the steel slag ANC was also influenced by the high contaminants, such as Fe2+, due to the hydroxides precipitate reactions except for sulfate formation reactions.
