An Ontology-Based Decision Support System to Foster Innovation and Competitiveness Opportunities of Health Tourism Destinations

Abstract: The competitiveness of nature-based Health Tourism (NHT) industry, especially in the Alpine regions, is increasingly linked to the sustainability and exploitation of unique natural resources of tourism destinations, which often lack the access to knowledge and networks of stakeholders to improve their offerings. In this sense, the use of digital tools can open up further opportunities to reconsider value offerings and better access different knowledge resources and relationships within the industry network. “…Besides the indoor visual enhancement, activities such as walking and hiking in these settings have shown benefits not only for cardiovascular fitness but also for immune function, as seen in the increase of Natural Killer cells (NK cells), and mental well-being (Haluza et al, 2014 ; Li, 2010 ). As such, the Alpine settings may be a viable option as a nature-based intervention as this distinct environment offers unique opportunities for health tourism, leveraging its clean air, diverse flora, and opportunities for physical activity, such as hiking, which are conducive to both physical and mental well-being (Spoladore & Pessot, 2023 ).…”

“…Currently, this industry is growing, and every country is claiming its share. Countries with extensive and advanced medical facilities such as hospitals, clinics, and other medical centers equipped with advanced medical devices, and staffed by doctors, specialists, surgeons, and other medical professionals aware of the latest global medical advancements and specialties, are the destinations for many patients seeking treatment and healing (Spoladore et al, 2023). With the shift from the traditional economy and intensifying competition, the continuity of organizations and markets depends on identifying and attracting new customers and retaining existing ones (Soofi & Aligholi, 2022).…”

“…The goal of this system is to connect the available natural resources, the value offerings and the target groups of nature-based health tourism (NHT) destinations. [38] All these approaches use ontology to include all the group decision support system. The role of ontology in this kind of approaches is for two objectives: the first one is to represent the knowledge base of the system and the second objective is to use the inference system and reasoning techniques of ontology to get result and decision.…”
