An open‐label prospective study to assess short incubation time white LED light photodynamic therapy in the treatment of superficial basal cell carcinoma

Abstract

The incidence of basal cell carcinoma and other keratinocyte cancers is increasing worldwide. 1,2 Topical methyl 5-aminolaevulinic acid (MAL) photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a popular treatment for superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC) due to the excellent cosmetic outcomes and lack of serious adverse events. It is suitable for patients with multiple tumours and patients who have negative experiences with other treatment modalities. The main drawback with conventional PDT (c-PDT) is pain. A departmental audit on pain scores in our department showed that 33% of patients undergoing c-PDT for sBCC experience severe pain. 3 Daylight PDT
