An overview of basic molecular biology of SARS-CoV-2 and current COVID-19 prevention strategies

Abstract: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) manifests as extreme acute respiratory conditions caused by a novel beta coronavirus named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) which is reported to be the seventh coronavirus to infect humans . Like other SARS-CoVs it has a large positive-stranded RNA genome. But, specific furin site in the spike protein, mutation prone and phylogenetically mess open reading frame1ab (Orf1ab) separates SARS-CoV-2 from other RNA viruses. Since t… Show more

“…The protein contributes to viroporin activity, virus assembling, and the virus budding process. Based on the results of several studies, the nonstructural proteins encoded by genes positioned within the 5′-region of the virus genome, have a wide range of roles from host translation inhibition by NS1 to viral replication-transcription NS4 [12,13]. The main roles of the known nonstructural proteins of SARS-CoV-2 are summarized in Table 1.…”

“…SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus with a genome that encodes four structural proteins, i.e. the spike (S) protein, the envelope (E) protein, the membrane (M) protein and the nucleocapsid (N) protein, and the remainder polyproteins that are cleaved into various non-structural proteins important for replication [5,6]. SARS-CoV-2 infects a variety of cell types by binding to its receptor, i.e.…”
