An Ultra-low Power Consumption MAC Protocol Complied with IEEE 802.15.4/4e for Wireless Smart Utility Networks

Abstract: In gas and water utilities, the spread of ultra-low power Wireless-Smart Utility Networks (Wi-SUN) has been predicted. This paper proposes a novel MAC protocol (F-RIT protocol) complied with the RIT in IEEE 802.15.4e standards to implement the wireless SUN in the gas and water utilities effectively. The proposed protocol is compared with CSL in IEEE 802.15.4e in terms of power consumption and success rate of communication link establishment. Theoretical and simulated evaluation results show the effectiveness o… Show more

“…Figure 5 shows the collection success rate characteristics for polling intervals when the maximum number of additional addresses χ is set to 0, 3, 6, and 9. The collection success rates in all parameters achieve over 99.5%, which is a target rate of wireless systems for critical infrastructures [3], since the channel fluctuation is not considered in this paper. The proposed enhanced source routing scheme may increase the frame length of the DATA, but the collection success rate does not decrease because collisions are avoided by polling communications.…”

“…In the Wi-SUN JUTA profile, the interoperability of the F-RIT protocol [3] is assured based on IEEE 802. 15.4-2015 [1] in the physical (PHY) layer and the lower part of the MAC (Low-MAC) layer [26].…”
