An uncommon encounter during temporary pacemaker implantation – A double inferior vena cava

Abstract: Double inferior vena cavae (IVC) is a congenital variation caused by an unusual embryological development of the IVC. We report an incidental finding of infrarenal double IVC in a 70-year-old female.

“…Tanka [22] reported 2 cases (1 case each of male and female) of DIVC in Albania while CT imaging of the abdominal region. More recently, Kumar et al [11] reported an incidental finding of DIVC in an Indian female patient on CT abdominal angiography. Furthermore, Polguj et al [16] detected a case of DIVC by CT examination in a male patient with endovascular repair for abdominal aortic aneurysm.…”

“…Similarly, harvesting a kidney from a living donor with DIVC may create a challenge due to the renal vein length available for reconstruction techniques [ 11 ]. Kumar et al [ 18 ] reported the accidental finding of DIVC during a pacemaker implantation and described the difficulty created by the angles of the left and right IVCs, along with the decreasing caliber of the IVC. Furthermore, there have been suggestions that DIVCs require the implantation of more than 1 IVC filter for thrombi interruption [ 19 ].…”

“…Furthermore, there have been suggestions that DIVCs require the implantation of more than 1 IVC filter for thrombi interruption [ 19 ]. Interestingly, the association between DIVC and venous thromboembolism has been reported in several case reports, highlighting a possible increased incidence of thrombosis formation [ 18 ].…”
