An Update on the Incidence and Burden of Diabetic Ketoacidosis in the U.S.

Abstract: A recent study by Desai et al. (1) showed that the incidence and economic burden of hospitalizations due to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in the U.S. increased between 2003 and 2014 (1). We sought to understand the most recent impact of the disease in the U.S. using the 2017 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) (www.hcup-us.ahrq .gov/nisoverview.jsp). A total of 220,340 patients were identified with a primary diagnosis of DKA (61.6 cases of DKA per 10,000 admissions) (Table 1). The incidence of DKA per 10,000 admissi… Show more

“…Further research should also be encouraged from hospitals to publish data on diabetics having different anti-diabetic treatments so that the relationship between anti-diabetic treatments and severity of COVID-19 can also be explored in the future [ 102 ]. During the pre-COVID-19 era, several patient groups were also associated with higher risks and worse outcome of diabetic ketoacidosis [ 103 ]. Research comparing changes in severity and mortality in those specific patient groups can also help physicians prioritize their resources for a better clinical outcome.…”

“…DKA is the main reason for the hospitalization of patients with DM (25) and its treatment represents a substantial economic burden in terms of health care costs, both directly and indirectly, ranging from individual to national economy. For example in United Kingdom (UK), the average cost for an episode of diabetic ketoacidosis was £2064 per patient (26) and in the United States of America (USA), the total charges among DKA patients in 2017 were $6,757,748,178, with a mean of $30,836.19 (27).…”
