Analgesic and antibutyrylcholinestrasic activities of the venom prepared from the Mediterranean jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca (Forsskal, 1775)

Abstract: BackgroundToxins derived from jellyfishes have been exploited as a model for the development of new drug promising applications to treat neurodegenerative diseases. The present work is aimed to evaluate the acute toxicity of crude venom of Pelagia noctiluca and then to screen the analgesic and antibutyrylcholinestrasic (anti-BuChE) activities of the crude venom and its fractions.MethodsSephadex G75 gel was used to separate crude venom of Pelagia noctiluca, which led to some fractions. In addition, in vivo anal… Show more

“…Recently antibutyrylcholinestrasic activity was detected in the crude venom extracted from the tentacle material of the Mediterranean jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca . Inhibition of butylcholinestrase in the central nervous system may prove useful in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and senile dementia [ 138 ].…”

“…The SDS-PAGE profiles of venom extracted from Mediterranean and Caribbean specimens (S anchez-Rodríguez and Lucio-Martínez, 2011;Ayed et al, 2012c;Maisano et al, 2013) revealed protein bands between 4 and 150 kDa, with the most intense bands at an apparent molecular weight higher than 80 kDa (S anchez-Rodríguez and Lucio-Martínez, 2011;Ayed et al, 2012c).…”

“…In a first study, the two main fractions were used to test the analgesic activity at low doses and the inhibition of butyrylcholineesterase activity. The latter could be linked to the neurotoxic effects of the venom (Ayed et al, 2012c). In a second study, four fractions were isolated (Ayed et al, 2012b).…”
