The construction industry is one of the most critical activities for the sustainable development of a country, generating positive and negative economic, social and environmental impacts. These aspects can be measured by Sustainability Indicators and Indices, which are useful tools for society, investors and the government in decision-making, especially when purchasing products and services, as they quantify information about a phenomenon in a given dimension of sustainability. Therefore, the objective of this study is to propose a model for assessing the sustainability of civil construction companies, considering economic, social, environmental and corporate governance criteria. These criteria are aggregated into a single index using the PROMETHEE II multicriteria method, which allows to avoid the compensation effect caused by the aggregation operators based on the additive model. The model was used to evaluate four Brazilian construction companies: Alpha, Beta, Delta and Gamma. The data of these companies were collected in a database of the Brazilian Chamber of the Construction Industry and in the sustainability`s reports published by them. We concluded that the companies Alpha and Gamma, followed by the company Beta presented the best performances in corporate sustainability, while the construction company Delta has the worst level of corporate sustainability.

The main goal of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness, in terms of improvements in social and economic conditions, of a technical assistance and rural reach-out action carried out among a group of families from the Barra Nova Settlement, located in the city of Sidrolândia-MS, between 2013 and 2015. To do so, questionnaires were used, provided by the Instituto Nacional de Colonização e Reforma of the two periods, and a socio-demographic characterization of the families was carried out. Social and economic indicators were also calculated (Socioeconomic Index for Rural Settlements – ISAR), assessing the values before and after the rural reach-out actions, to identify the real impacts on the social and economic conditions of the families. Regarding the classification of the ISAR, it was noted that it remained as regular after the actions were carried out, although it has shown a significant improvement in its value (0.42 to 0.57). The results showed a high percentage of young people in the settlement and that women account for almost half of the properties with a single owner. Improvements were also observed in the quantity of productive assets and constructions, types of housing, generation of income, among others. In addition, there were improvements in food security, satisfaction with housing, fixation in rural areas, income diversification, and access to credit, among others. Likewise, we highlight that attention must be paid to some deficiencies such as the farmers’ low level of education, little participation in associations, poor conditions of access roads to the properties, and commercialization strategies for products produced by the families.

Quality index of permanent preservation areas of urban water resources: PPAWater

Urban expansion is widely acknowledged to have a substantial impact on water bodies. The objective of this work is to propose and apply a composite index to evaluate the quality of Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs), which protect urban rivers. The PPAWater index aggregates information from six indicators, namely, sanitary sewage, precarious settlement, urban drainage, level of occupation, conservation units, and preservation area, established by the municipal master plan. When applied to sub-basins in the city of Fortaleza, Ceará, the fifth most-populated city in Brazil, the index shows that the localities lacking sufficient sanitation infrastructure and with fewer hectares of protected areas register as the most vulnerable PPAs. The PPAWater index is an important tool to guide urban environmental planning, formulation, and management of public policies for the protection of urban water resources. It can be used by municipal managers to evaluate environmentally sensitive areas.
