Show more

“…Similar results were found by Souza et al (2010), in which the aridity index (AI) showed a statistically significant increase nucleus, at the level of 5% probability, in the Araripina micro region, with an annual maximum increase of around 1.65% in the municipality of Exú, in the state of Pernambuco. Santos et al (2018), analysed data from the Annual Average Precipitation (P), Potential Evapotranspiration (ETP) and Aridity Index (AI) in the Piracuruca River basin (PI/CE). These authors concluded that the highest levels of AI were concentrated in the areas, which registered the smallest precipitation totals and the highest values of ETP.…”

“…Among the coastal lagoons in Brazil, Peri Lagoon is the largest freshwater body by surface area on Santa Catarina Island (Santos et al, 1989). Limited environmental studies have been conducted on this lagoon since the 1970s, resulting in significant gaps in our understanding of its functions (Teive et al, 2008).…”

“…This characterization, on the other hand, also needs to account for the remarkable interannual variability of precipitation influenced by teleconnection patterns between large-scale circulation mechanisms and local climatological aspects. It is known, for example, that the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) oppositely influences rainfall regime in upper and lower portions of the SFW (Galvíncio and de Sousa, 2002;dos Santos et al, 2011;Souto et al, 2019). Additionally, the sea surface temperature gradient in the Tropical Atlantic Ocean (Atlantic Meridional Mode [AMM]) strongly influences rainfall over a considerable extension of semiarid drylands in Brazil (Andreoli and Kayano, 2006;Cavalcanti, 2012;Marengo et al, 2017).…”
